YES! Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and hemp allow your skin to BREATHE… unlike synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon! It’s super important to allow your skin to breathe since it’s the LARGEST organ on your body!
Natural fibers prevent skin irritations like rashes and fungal growth like Candida. HINT: If you don’t know where to start, begin by wearing underwear and loungewear made of natural fibers like COTTON.

Most people don’t know that synthetic-fiber fabrics are poisoning our water. Public water is a resource for all humans, and unfortunately every time you wash that synthetic-fiber garment or blanket in your washing machine, synthetic fibers and microplastics entering our water system. Other things are entering the water, too, from synthetic-fiber clothes: PFAS chemicals. All bad. PFAS chemicals are compounds made of molecules bonded with unbreakable carbon chains, which means they are really hard to get rid of once they are inside your body. Bottom line: you want to avoid getting PFAS chemicals in your body, ever.

California was the first state to pass legislation banning the sale of any consumer apparel goods that contain PFAS chemicals. “Apparel” even includes curtains, bedspreads, etc. For decades, PFAS chemicals have been used on fabrics in order to create “waterproof” or “stain-resistant” fabrics. These fabrics have been used on everything from rain jackets to couches to baby high-chairs and carseats. Other consumer goods containing PFAS that were banned include: cleaning products, cookware, dental floss, juvenile products, food packaging, and ski wax.
If you’re interested in learning more about the dangers of PFAS chemicals, check out the film “Dark Waters,” which tells the story of how PFAS chemicals came to poison groundwater and people in the United States.
Unfortunately, choosing to wear synthetic clothing can be harmful to both your body and the environment, which means it has the potential to impact everyone around you.
If some of your all-time favorite pieces in your wardrobe are made of synthetic fabrics, you might want to rotate wearing them with clothes made of natural fibers. This way you’re not wearing synthetic fibers every single day. Also, one great benefit of buying vintage clothes made of synthetic fibers is that you’re not contributing to the manufacture of NEW clothes made of synthetic fibers, and you’re also preventing those vintage clothes from ending up in a landfill, where they will take centuries to decompose and potentially poison the soil in the meantime.
