Want to read the 2nd Best-Selling Book of the 19th Century? Well, this is it!!!

(The 1st Best-Selling book of the 19th century was the Bible, if that tells you anything.)

Harriet Beecher Stowe's book was so good that it was immediately banned, defacto, in the American South! Why? Because Stowe was able to bring the graphic inhumane-ness of slavery to the mainstream consciousness-- & make it personal. The results? People were outraged. Bolstering the anti-slavery movement & widely regarded as a catalyst to the Civil War, Stowe's story of the tragic death of a God-fearing selfless slave was able to grab the moral compasses of readers worldwide. Wildly popular in the US & Great Britain immediately upon its release in 1852, let's just say that Stowe understood the assignment. Viewed as virulent in the American South, Uncle Tom's Cabin presented an anti-slavery message that didn't align with the Southern cash-crop plantation business model that required slavery for its massive profits. Example: A bookseller in Mobile, Alabama, was forced to leave town for selling Stowe's novel despite the book's alignment with Christian ideologies. Stowe herself received many threatening letters from Southern critics – one included the severed ear of a slave. Did that stop her? Nope.
